A Note from Gideon

Welcome to the latest edition of On The Radar!

What a wonderful time of the year! Kids are back in school, nights are getting cooler, days are getting shorter but are still warm and bright, and best of all, the trees are getting ready to put on their annual autumn extravaganza of color! In our recent Following Foliage webinar, Evan Fisher discussed how this yearly blushing of the landscape is heavily dependent upon longer cool nights and shorter sunny days, which are certainly upon us now.

So stoke the fire, grab some hot cocoa, curl up with a blanket, and get ready to learn all about the science of fall color and much more when you…

Check out what’s going on this month!

Becoming a Weather Information "Power User"

10 November at 7:00 PM ET

Nearly everyone uses weather information; however, the weather information available from various media outlets, websites, and mobile apps isn’t enough for everyone. Some folks have a weather-dependent hobby like hiking, sailing, or storm chasing. Others work in weather-related careers such as emergency management, aviation, or science journalism or broadcasting. These folks need to be weather information “power users” – possessing greater weather savvy than most members of the public. Join our panel of power users to explore how Penn State’s online Weather Forecasting Certificate program can turn weather enthusiasts and those who work in weather-related careers into weather information power users to enhance their hobbies or careers.

How Time Flies...10 years since Superstorm Sandy

A panel of distinguished guests discussed Superstorm Sandy's legacy, its lasting impacts, and the lessons we have learned from that remarkable storm. The panel shared their diverse perspectives from the media, the energy sector, and government forecasters at the national and local level. This recording will be up next week—.

Moderated by Chris Vagasky, this webinar presented Dr. Kim Wood from Mississippi State University as she spoke on the development of Hurricane Ian. The webinar discussed the current state of the tropical system, the latest forecast, potential impacts, and more.

This was a first in what AMS Weather Band is planning as a series of webinars that focus on important weather events as they happen. Our intent is not to give you the current conditions and predictions that you might find on a weather broadcast or website, but to give our viewers a look at the science and various uncertainties or variables behind each highlighted event. We hope to give you a peek behind the scenes of what is happening in the lead up to a major weather event.
