We sat down with artist and science communicator Jill Pelto to learn more about her background and fieldwork, her artistic process, and why she sees art as the key to connecting more audiences to science.
Jill Pelto completed her M.S. in August 2018, focused on studying the sensitivity of the Antarctic Ice Sheet to changes in our Earth climate system. She completed this degree at the University of Maine, where she also completed Bachelor degrees in Studio Art and Earth Science. Her art has appeared in exhibitions across the United States and Canada, and she has participated in extensive field work; conducting research in Washington and British Columbia, Antarctica, the Falkland Islands, and New Zealand. One of Jill’s driving passions is her love of nature, which has inspired her to transform her art into a vehicle for science communication and environmental issues. We asked Jill to sit down with us to tell us more about her story, including details about her science background, how fieldwork has influenced her art, and how she uses art to connect science to a larger audience than data alone might reach.
We have an exclusive tote bag with her art in the Weather Band store, and you can find more of her artwork on her website at jillpelto.com.
Transcript for the interview will follow soon.
