Kelly Núñez Ocasio, a postdoctoral fellow at the Mesoscale and Microscale Meteorology Laboratory at NCAR, on what she enjoys most about her job.
“A big aspect of my job is the fulfillment. At the end of the day, I’m able to save life and property, either through directly communicating the science to the public and helping them get informed or indirectly through research by informing the weather and climate models and contributing to our knowledge of the tropical atmosphere. I think the other very big part of my job that I like the most is the fact that I can spend a lot of time providing professional services. I love mentoring. I am a big advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. That I get to spend time advocating and mentoring internally at NCAR and externally through AMS as a Committee on Hispanic and Latinx Advancement (CHALA) ambassador and as an Annual Meeting Oversight Committee member is very fulfilling. It is in those ways that I find myself currently helping the younger generations join the field and push them forward as well.”
