A Note from Gideon

Welcome to the latest edition of On The Radar! I’m happy to report that we have avoided any record-breaking heat domes this year in Oregon and Washington, but we’ll see what the rest of August holds for us. In the meantime, I always enjoy hearing what is going on for others in their area.

One recent development with Weather Band has been the expansion of our to include AMS professional members and encouraging everyone to join our online conversations. Sharing and learning through the Weather Band Open Forum are some of the many reasons why I really appreciate the involvement and discussions within our community. I recently posted a picture of a “squatty” cumulonimbus (above) that I saw in Yellowstone National Park, and I received informative input about what else I was seeing from members in the forum—thanks!

Weather Band has some great discussions and events. Check out what’s in store for everyone this month!

Recently Hurricane Specialist Bryan Norcross discussed the challenges of real time analysis and communications in the modern world with our Weather Band audience. Forecasters are deluged with data that could be conveyed to the public and need to discern which ones will motivate people to make the right decisions for their safety.

GOES-18 is undergoing post-launch testing, and will take over as the operational GOES-West in early 2023. During its checkout phase, data from the GOES-18 Advanced Baseline Imager will be provided via operational GOES-West data streams in August and again from mid-October to mid-November. This webinar includes examples of the data from GOES-18, and highlights the capabilities of its instrumentation.

Bill Bunting takes Weather Band members along as he describes the day-to-day operations of the Storm Prediction Center as it fulfills its mission of protecting life and property from severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and critical fire weather conditions.
